But, I’m coming around to the kitchen. While in my 20s I’d be out the door to meet friends for dinner or drinks faster than you could say “I think 90210 was still a thing when you were in your 20s,” nowadays I’m too much of a homebody and too much of a cheapo to do much of that. Now, I’m a fan of the dinner party.
Okay, so I’m playing it a little fast and loose with the term “dinner party,” but these days we’re more apt to have friends over for pasta or pizza and a bottle of wine than we are to hit the town. (I just typed “hit the town” in all seriousness. Am I 70?) It’s way cheaper, way cozier, and there are fewer bros around you throwing back, like, papaya mojitos. (Mmmmm, papaya mojitos.)
So, what are the go-tos of this little culinary novice? Allow me to present three gems, which are perfect for this chilly time of year, easy to throw together, and cost under $20 for four servings:
- Manicotti: Oh Martha, sometimes I just wanna kiss your frigid little face. This delightful dish gets bonus points for being easy to make ahead of time!
- White Chicken Chili: This is my favorite chili ever AND it doesn’t stain my clothes when I inevitably drool it all over myself because it’s that good.
- Pumpkin Pasta with Sausage: I know, I know, Rachael Ray. The only thing I can say about this dish is try it before you dismiss it. Plus, when everyone asks where you got the recipe, you can realistically say: “Oh, just some blog on the internets.”
So there you have it! Next time you’re thinking of hitting the town (I UNWITTINGLY DID IT AGAIN!), consider popping to the grocery store with a 20-spot, spending a little time in the kitchen, and putting all the money you saved in your piggy bank!
PS: Curious about what G was up to in the kitchen? May I present Pioneer Woman's Chicken Mozzeralla Pasta, another crowd pleaser (Thanks, George!). Tada:
