Okay, so I guess it's not really a scheme scheme--there are no points involved, no weird coupon codes, nothing like that---it's more of a .... game of discipline. But scheme sounds way more fun, right? Game of Discipline sounds like a show I should pitch to HBO. A really boring show.
Here's what I plan to do: In the past, when I've gotten a gift card, let's say to a restaurant, I've been all "BONUS! Now instead of one date this month we get TWO!" Buuuut, what if instead of that, I just stick to my plan of one date (or whatever, one clothing purchase, one book from Amazon--whatever you might "typically" buy that correlates with your card) a month, use the gift card to cover it, and then funnel the cash I would've otherwise spent into a vacation account. Bingo!
You picking up what I'm putting down?
I'm gonna give it a try for a whole year and see what shakes out. Plus, it makes the gift doubly lovely. Not only do I get a nice night out (or a sweater, or a trip to Target ... whatever) from a loved one, I also learn some discipline (which always helps with becoming a better budgeter long term) and just might score my next trek sooner than I previously woulda thought. Now that's a gift that really keeps on giving!
Who's in? Willing to take the gift card challenge with me?
