George and I have been talking about how the passing of Labor Day feels like we should be getting ready to go back to school, even though we’ve long (and I mean looooooong) since left those days behind. And yet, there’s something new and crisp about the start of another fall season. It’s a perfect time to get yourself in order and give yourself a fresh start on whatever aspect of your life has, perhaps, fallen a bit behind or gotten a bit out of control in the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. But where to start? My two go-tos:
- Budget! Come on, you spotted this from a mile away, right? Sorry, but I’m never going to give up on thinking that having a budget, in writing, is the single best way to stay on track financially and to meet (and exceed!) your monetary goals, whether it’s starting a 401K, saving up for a dream trip, or just getting a sense of where your hard-earned cash is going each month. There’s no time like the present, so why not use the changing of the seasons to create—or update, if necessary—your financial roadmap? Check out the steps I took to make my first budget here, here, and here.
- Organize! Oooh, Marie Kondo. My love for you will never die. While I did my big KonMari purge back in the spring, I’m still transfixed, and have decided that fall is the perfect time for a fresh micro-purge. (There’s a never-used Christmas tree stand in my basement that has Got. To. Go.) So in with the Pumpkin Spice candles and lattes, and out with the …. old crap.
Are you in? What's on your fall freshen up list?
